You know that gut instinct that you are being followed? That’s how I felt on my morning walk through the forest one summer morning at Friday Harbor Labs. I usually took morning walks to listen to the bird’s morning chorus, watch the first ferry arrive into the harbor, and catch the first rays of sunlight as they shone through the mountains to the east. This morning was no different than any other except for the odd feeling that something or someone was following me through the woods. As I came into a clearing a fox emerged from the bushes behind me, ran around me, and stopped ten yards in front of me, watching me the whole time. I was in awe that this little forest creature was as close as it was, so I sat down with my camera and started taking pictures. The fox was quite curious about the whole situation and started moving closer to me (this is when I captured this image). The fox continued to move closer, about two yards in front of me, until I moved just a bit too fast, spooking the animal. After that the fox retreated to a patch of grass under a nearby tree, rolled around for a bit, satisfied an itch, and then disappeared back into the forest. Every morning after, I went back to the clearing, but never saw the fox again.
